Concurring with someone else who posted earlier,

Jowy Atreides-Blight (Suikoden II)
I really do think his story might have been more compelling than the main character. He was born privileged, sure, but growing up he was something of an outcast. The other kids didn't like him and his own family treated him like crap. Jowy had it tough from all sides. The guy was brilliant though, definitely. I'm not sure how much of the scheming was Jowy's or Leon's, but the Dunan Unification War could have gone differently without them. And that final duel between him and the hero was heart rending.

Luke fon Fabre (Tales of the Abyss)
The whole 'amnesiac main character turns out to be a clone of some other cooler guy' shtick screams shades of Final Fantasy VII, but unlike the whiny jerk Cloud, Luke manages to be more endearing. He's an entitled little brat early on, and as far as group dynamics went he was dead weight. There was a lot to dislike, really. Down the road though, he goes through something of an identity crisis and this is when he grows as a character. Of all the Tales titles I've only played through Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, Abyss and part of a fan translated Innocence. While the series does oftentimes support a memorable supporting cast only Luke pops up for me as a really dynamic main character.

Magus (Chrono Trigger)
Magus was rocking long silver locks, an Oedipus complex, and raising hell for the good guys way before it was cool (Read: Sephiroth). And then you got to play as him.

Aeris/Aerith always held a sentimental spot for me (for reasons everyone knows) and like Aya, she was a real sweetheart who had a backbone.

I never thought of my favorite Rpg character and at the moment, I still give it some thought.

Game: Final Fantasy V

Why I like him: Even though he's quite old(Around his 60s maybe), I thought he had the most funniest dialog though out the adventure. Spoiler Warning-He is also one of the first FF main characters to die half though the game before Arith. Other then that, he may be old but he has a lot beef left in him.

And no, I'm Texan. I just think he's pretty funny. x3

My favorite is Jihl Nabaat from Final Fantasy 13/13-2. Even though she was killed in FF13, her she played a huge role in the plot and is just a really cool character. The chance to fight her in 13-2 and have her as a party member was awesome. She never left my paradigm pack!
