Beginner's Guide to Variables Version 2.0 DOWNLOAD LINK VERSION 2.0 (without RTP data): http://www.mediafire.com/?zmvylnz3tim Mirror link: http://www.4shared.com/file/cHhR4h44/Begin..._Variables.html The file is packaged into a .rar file and you need WinRAR (or something equivalent) to unpack it. Variables not working right? Please update your game interpreter and fix your variables! NOTE: While this is a guide for beginners, you still need some general knowledge about RPG Maker VX. You need to know what switches, conditional branches and what event pages are - and how to use them. If you don't know, then I would happily suggest you play through Aindra's School before playing this guide. Information This guide is meant for teaching people who are confused how variables work, and what you can do with them. I made a guide in the form of a game that you can play through, and once done, you can look inside the game's events to see how everything was set up. I hope I explained it right (and correct ... haha), and I hope the small examples of what you can do with variables will help. There are 5 rooms in this game that teaches the player how to use variables. Then there's an outside map in which I created a few mini-games using only variables, conditional branches and sound effects. Once you've looked through all the room's events, you can go ahead and check out the events for the outside map and try to figure out why those events are set up like that. If anyone who plays through this game and finds bugs, and or spelling errors, please report them to me so I can fix it! That said, happy playing! Tips & Tricks covered in this tutorial: - How to activate an event page through the use of a variable - How to 'collect items' and keep track of them - How to check the amount of an item in the inventory - How to decrease a player's gold with variables - How to use the 'random' feature with variables - How to create a custom timer with images Mini-games made with variables I fixed up a few mini-game events consisting of variables that I'm sure you'll find very useful. Some mini-games I created in the guide; - A lottery event - A bank event - A fishing event - A digging gold in dirt event - A catching chickens event - A collecting event - A timer I don't mind if you copy the entire event and use it in your game. Credit isn't needed either. Spread the word! ![]() CODE Screenshots of the guide ![]() ![]()

Downloading now, and it looks okay. I pretty much suck at variables so this might help me for making my new game.

Its surprising how many people don't know how to use variables, I found them simple from day 1. Then again on day 1 I already made a skill shop and character select system, then an evented shop screen within a week...
I'll check it out -------------------- Five things I would tell other RMers:
-Frankenspriting is really easy, anyone can have a go for great results. -What matters is not the script but how you use it -NEVER underestimate the power of events. -When using RTP remember Vibrato and recolours. -Use the wondereous substance know as paper (plan, note and sketch your work) My most epic IRC moment ever: Spoiler: I support: Spoiler: ![]() And lastly I made a blog, check it out here: Ryou's Work Reports (Blog last updated on 09/10/2010) |

Dammit, it took me forever to win that lottery. D-:<
Anyways, you did a good job. I personally like the fishing one, probably because of the balloons. I know you have the ability to create a 'Hit On' Gauge where there is a bar with a part of it whited out and a small line going back and forth and the player will have to press a button when the line is on the white part of the bar. >_> I did this once with variables and you might want to put it there, under 'Advanced Variable Usage' or something like that. BTW: Candy cane borders? ftw. -------------------- |

That's some very advanced stuff! I don't think this would fit in a beginner's guide, but it would fit in an advanced guide, which might be a good idea to make. Maybe. Sometime |
