Tale of the Tribes

The setting

The year is 1500AC in what we now call "Mesoamerica".

The Cabecar, Bribri and Maleku, amongst other tribes, are living a normal life just like they had done for thousands of years. In between these tribes however, existed a relationship in many ways unknown for many. Their traditions, their culture. Their history.

It's inside this history that we will explore the story of a young man named Yowo. A simple young man of the tribe who is about to discover the world as he transitions from a boy to man along with all the trials that may come to him which will lead into knowing himself and the world. Both the old, and the new world.

Although this story is heavily based on historical elements that you can even research in the web, museums, books and university papers. There's a fine line where mysticism and reality merge. Today we know there's no such things as ghosts, but these tribes believed in them. I am looking forward to put the player in the perspective that they are in fact members of this tribe and make them believe exactly what they believed (with a quota of my own mind's invention)

Characters

Yowo

Yowo is the main character. He's 18 years old and you begin the game as he starts his journey into being a man rather than a boy. This is a mere formality as Yowo has a tendency to sneak out of the village and face some of the things that he should face at this point and everyone knows he's well prepared.

The Cacique

Cacique means 'king'. All tribes must have a leader, and Yowo's tribe is no exception. He's present in all of the important moments of the tribe, including fighting, hunting and all religious matters. Although he's not strictly tied to religion as he cannot hear the voice of Dular, the God's messenger.

The Sukia

Sukia means 'shaman'. Just like the Cacique, all tribes have a leader in matters of religion. The Sukia is the Cacique's right hand and when a decision cannot be made by the Cacique, he will turn to his sukia to get in touch with the spiritual world through Dular.

Entities and Beliefs

While entitites are not all present in an interactable form, all of them play a rather important role. The tribes believe that nature and Gods are all tied together, even them that are nothing more than seeds. Their spirits live on after death as creatures of the Kal-yok (forest) and that is the reason they only kill what's needed and hold all animals in such a high regard, because these animals are all their ancestors who have passed on through death and came back to this world.

Siboo is their leader. They do not worship him but they always keep in mind that Siboo is always watching over them and that Siboo is the only good God that is on the same land as them.

Kritom is what you would relate to the Devil. He's Siboo's 'brother' as they both came from the same rock. Kritom is the only bad God that is amongst all humans just like Siboo.

Just a question; isn't it common in tribes and such to make the boy grow up to be a man when they're very young, like between 10-12?

Cel, they do. Actually I'm sure Costa Rican tribes accepted their children at 15. But due to a variety of reasons (15 year olds being morons) I'm making Yowo to be slightly older.

It's also a part of the plot that his initiation has failed several times before.

He's a very... interesting person. While you get to choose what he thinks at certain moments, all of these affecting what will happen in the future, his personality shows up. He has a very specific reactions to certain moments so I'm pretty sure he's not the cheerful idiot (like zidane or goku)
