QUOTE
The Original:

A few years ago in the entirely fictional Kingdom of Maine, a political band of foreign diplomats seized control of the throne and began manipulating the current king in power. Plundering Maine's rich economy, this mysterious organization was eventually found out and expedited viciously by a small force of totally radical warriors, chief among them the protagonist of our story: Anebriate. Order was eventually restored to the kingdom, but the riches lost could not be recovered. Totally unrelated, Anebriate became absurdly wealthy and spent his days loafing around in his house, drinking himself into comas and picking fights with local shopkeepers.

This story begins upon the eve of a series of catastrophic events which will lead to Anebriate suffering the loss of his vast wealth, his house, his memory, and subsequently, his impressive skills. This is a tale of recovery--not just the recovery of monetary concerns or memory, but also the recovery of lost humanity.

Big Trouble in Little China, Maine:

Strange things are afoot in Webber's frozen homeland in China, Maine. He enlists the help of Anebriate and the gang to check things out, only to find that someone with extraordinary powers has been terrorizing the locals. Upon investigating, they discover a series of clues which lead them to Augusta, the overgrown former-capital of Maine which is now a hippie colony and Native American reservation. These clues lead them to a revelation nearly as terrifying as George Washington himself: the culprit appears to be a rogue save hobo. Anebriate and company must enter the Save Realm and seek justice from the Supreme Save Council.

Spoiler:
If I don't respond to the thread for whatever reason right away, feel more than free to send me an email at Anebriate@gmail.com with any question or concerns. It is the preferred method of contact since I will be notified immediately, and should result in a quicker response. Another method of contact is via AIM at OminousPiratus, but the chances of catching me on that are less likely.

CHARACTERS:
Spoiler:

Anebriate:

Anebriate is the main character, and the person to whom all the unfortunate things happen. He's generally lazy, hates straining himself, doesn't particularly care to involve himself in extraneous activities, and generally just wants to loaf around. His greatest pleasures include: back-rubs, booze, eating donuts, and sleeping. Nobody is quite sure how he became the world's greatest warrior, and nobody is really surprised when all of a sudden he's forgotten all about it.

Palmer:

Palmer is a Cardinal, a high-ranking member of the Catholic church. He was once an active priest, traveling the world with Anebriate in search of meaning, and money, but over the past few years he's settled down in the Litchfield cathedral to take charge of the clergy's affairs. However, when he finds himself confronted with an oblivious Anebriate, the temptation to tag along is too great, and he forces himself into the party. Palmer may be a stalwart religious defender, but he is in no way a good role model. He's misogynistic and generally abusive towards children. He carries around a walking stick or a cane, which he occasionally uses to "slap a bitch."

Deemer:

Also known as "Deemer the White," he is a powerful magician who lives a peaceful life in the humble forest village of Richmond. When the tavern burns to the ground and magic is suspected however, a number of fingers point in his direction, making him an immediate concern for our protagonist. Whether he is responsible or not, Anebriate must travel to Richmond and speak with him, or to fight, whichever comes first.

Dave

Dave is a capable pilot who agrees to help Anebriate and his companions out on their quest by escorting him around free of charge. He's also abundantly friendly and helpful, and nobody really stops to contemplate why he is so eager to help without any apparent benefit. He's so friendly, in fact, that it borders on frightening. I guess they just can't help but trust that beard.

As well as these four primary characters, there are three optional ones that you may attempt to adopt, and it may have substantial impact on the ending of the game if you do...
Spoiler:

Emma:

Emma is a warlock by trade, often using her mysterious magics to help out government officials, or merely to scare animals away from crops for the benefit of local farmers. She is quick-witted and wise, but also short-tempered and intolerant to ignorance, which puts Anebriate in a bad spot. She'll agree to help your little crew in exchange for a rare anthology of poetry, but the book won't be cheap.

Albert:

Albert is a dedicated thief, and he's been causing some mischief in town. If you agree to help a citizen in need, you might happen upon Albert during one of his nightly stalks through the square. After being prodded for a while and refusing to give up any information, Anebriate comes to learn an extremely significant piece of information about Albert that tends to hinder communication between them. Nevertheless, his skills are impressive, and if you play your cards right you can get Albert on the team.

Webber

Webber is clearly a madman. He screams everything he says at the top of his lungs, and is constantly yearning for bloodshed. You may see him around the slums of Gardiner, enjoying a cold one, and it would behoove you to gather what information from him that you can. Some people say Webber wants nothing more than to destroy everything in sight. Some say he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorders. Still others say that all Webber really wants is a friend.

SCREENSHOTS:

FAQ
Spoiler:

Q. Is this purely a nonsense game?
A. No! Don't be fooled by the silly title; the game IS fundamentally a comedy, but it is NOT just a nonsense game. It is a very detailed and surprisingly captivating game.

Q. It says "Book III," where are books I and II?
A. Book I is for RPG Maker 2,000, and has not been released (yet). It was made many years ago, and does not meet my standards of publication, so I have not released it to the public. Book II was being produced in RPG Maker XP, but went unfinished, and I abandoned the platform altogether. I decided to call this version "Book III" in the event that I revitalize either (or both) of the previous projects.

Q. Why do you have a Web Site for the game if it's not for sale?
A. For a number of reasons. I wanted a place where I could more thoroughly customize the presentation of Drunken Paladin, as well as a forum where people could talk about all things relevant to the game without worrying about mature themes and language. Drunken Paladin is a very human experience, and as we know, humans can be beautiful and horrible all at once. Also, and perhaps most importantly, Drunken Paladin will eventually become a COMPANY which will represent distinct products such as Tales of the Drunken Paladin (the game), Web Comics and relevant merchandise.

Q. Who could have made all of this madness?
A. Steve Gibbon, a married man and freelance copywriter/author who lives in Topsham, Maine. If you want to know more, join the forum and ask!

Jim, thanks for the review, and don't worry about how long it took, school is always more important.

I am kicking myself to this day for not finding that speech script sooner, because at this point it would literally take a week to change the thousands of message lists over. I completely agree with you, however.

This game is actually good. I got lots of laugh, and I like the maps.
And having that hobo as a save was a great idea.
Even the weapin description gives the laugh.

I liked the music used in this. I think it fits well for the game.

This game's good, and I hope it get's viewed by others.
Keep it up.

*Not so good with reviews*

Hey, thanks for the compliments everyone. I was just starting to get a little down for the lack of reviews, but you two have reinforced my desire to succeed with this game.

I noticed a couple of minor bugs in the version posted in the first post, so I'm going to patch them up real quick.

I don't know if anyone's come across them, but there was a bad conditional switch preventing players from reaching the bridge.

This game is terribly offensive and the humor is repulsive and crude. Sir, you should be ashamed of yourself for uploading this filth. Think of the children!

...I'm just kidding, this game is motherfuckin' great. I haven't gotten too far (I got brutally raped by monsters in the underground basement maze, maybe you should tone those guys down) I'll give you a full review after I get further; but so far I really like what I see. The maps are pretty, the music is recognizable but fitting (Black Mages ftw) I was seriously laughing nonstop while playing, and even just randomly inspecting objects around town was lolworthy. You've got a top notch sense of humor there, Drunken Paladin. I'll give more feedback once I actually get through the demo. :D

Haha, had me worried at first.

Thanks man, glad you like it. Hopefully I'll have the patched version uploaded within the next few minutes in case you get stuck at the bug I mentioned.

I will download this demo in a few minutes, but firstly I want to ask you ONE thing:
I have been tirelessly trying to fit in the changing screen-tints for times of day... and my tests are semi-conclusive. The only problem I've faced is that after a full 24 hours in game the tints have all overlaid eachother and are henceforth indistinguishable. How did you fix that issue (or never face it)?! XD

It's a script made for RMVX by Kylock. It operates variables up to 2400, which constitutes a clock.

It's pretty plug+play, just look it up here on the forums, or even Google Kylock's Time System VX.

I should add that the events you create depend upon self-made common events, but the script makes it extremely simple. Something like so long as the conditional is between X and Y, the "night" switch is on.

I look forward to hearing what you thought of TDP.

It's a script made for RMVX by Kylock. It operates variables up to 2400, which constitutes a clock.

It's pretty plug+play, just look it up here on the forums, or even Google Kylock's Time System VX.

Yes, I've implemented a clock system. Perhaps I was not looking hard enough, but all I could locate for conditional branches with regards to cariables had equal to, greater/less than or equal to, greater than, less than, and not equal to. Is there another way to go about conditional branching in which the 'between variables' selection is an option?

After implementing Kylock's Time System (in the spoiler), this is the common event I made to differentiate events happening at night from ones happening during the day.

From this point, creating night events is as easy as putting the "Night People" switch ON as a condition for an event.

I just got Deemer to join the party; is there more to the demo after that? I can't figure out where to go, maybe because I was playing when I was half asleep. XD

Anyways, so far your game has been really enjoyable. Like I said earlier, the comedy is very well-written and your attention to detail (being able to inspect almost everything) is impeccable. And the mapping was really, really good. Your maps are definitely some of the best RTP maps I've seen. The music was cool, the battles were fun, and the hidden optional bosses were also a nice touch. I lol'd when Anebriate freaked out about the potatoes with eyes. I also really like all the side quests and optional characters (Albert is a pimp). If I had to rate this game I'd give it a 5/5.

Man, I'm trying to isolate a funny quote or funny event to talk about in this game but I can't think of just one. Maybe I just have a weird sense of humor but I was literally laughing throughout the whole game. Good stuff man, good stuff.

Thanks man, it's always great to hear stuff like this.

After you get Deemer, you're close to the end. All that's left is to mosey across the bridge (by leaving Richmond and heading south) and wandering through the swamp if you so desire.

Thanks a ton for playing the demo and letting me know what you thought.

Well, because I'm a loser I've yet to escape that terrible labyrinth beneath Larry's (on fire), but I love the game. Especially those boxes. It would be wicked (but stupid indeed) if through a side-quest you could get that one box (that Anebriate didn't know what to do with) to join the party. XD
Okay, as an unofficial tester, I've found some little things that could be fixed to help polish the game. I has list: let me show u dem.

-Set butterflies to 'above'. It's a pain being stuck behind insects. (I have the exact same thing implemented in my game to have butterflies meandering randomly through Mindre, but I soon realized that keeping them on above would enhance the realism. If you want, as well, Moogle made some butterfly recolours for GrandmaDeb: you can find them here.)
-Check some of the tileset permissions. I walked up a wall via a clock.
-Sneaky Pete kind of POOF vanished, along with some random chest sprites. Dunno if that was s'posed to happen after I bought something from him.
-Event kinda repeated after I went to Larry's only to go back home and get the coupon. Didn't really bother me, but n'eh, just a point I noticed.

I haven't gotten far at all. The basement maze is kicking my ass. (I'm such a sissy.) But I'm gonna have another go at it.

This game is so freakin awesome. I've never chuckled to a game as much as I have to this one. (In fact, I haven't really chuckled honestly to any RMVX game so far until this one.) I mean, hell, I even got a giggle out of the opening dialogue. And the fact that I can explore just about anything sitting around is just amazing.

Anebriate is the best main character I've ever seen. It's hard not to love him. I haven't finished it yet, but so far, this is my favorite RMVX game. (For some reason, Vivi's theme just seems to fit Anebriate so well..)

Cheers to you for making Anebriate.

Harlequynn, thanks for your input. I think I might tone down the monsters in that maze a little bit, but I am against making it too easy.

As for the first butterfly that is on the same level as Anebriate: you can talk to it, which is why it's non-passable. All the other bugs in the game are set to "above." =P
And the coupon thing has been a thorn in my side for some time. I know HOW to write the event so that everything works properly but it requires some back-tracking. I might just take the easy route and set an event where Anebriate won't leave his house at the beginning until you find the coupon. Which will make everyone's (including my own) life a little easier.

As for Sneaky Pete... the only thing I can think of is that dawn rolled around during the time you and him conversed. Sneaky Pete does not like to be exposed by the light of day, and vanishes every morning, along with his belongings!

I appreciate the time you've spent trying this game out, and I encourage you not to give up in the maze! It's tricky but it IS surmountable.

Antares, thanks for the kind words. Anebriate has been with me for many years (since the first installment in RM2K), and I, too, have grown to love him. The maze is the devil in basement form, but I assure you that once you have achieved this task, the game is a little smoother-sailing.

I'm currently working on the third city, Gardiner, which is extremely dense. It's not quite as large as Litchfield map-wise, but it is jam-packed full of events and things to do and see.

In the interest of making sure nobody loses out because they're lost in Larry's Labyrinth, I've created a cheat sheet. Please note that this cheat sheet does not indicate hidden items or bosses, as I feel those should be discovered all by your lonesome. wink.gif

Enjoy!
